What accomplishment are you most proud of?
The easy answer is that I’m quite proud I was able to reclaim my health/fitness at a young age. When I was about 24, I lost 80 pounds of completely unnecessary, unhealthy weight. Really this was just a side benefit of learning to love exercise and healthy eating. I’ve completed a number of half-marathons and one marathon–these are all things I’m proud of. Ultimately, though, I think that just learning to love taking care of my body is my proudest fitness accomplishment.
What are your New Year’s Resolutions for 2016?
As far as fitness goes, my resolution is to be consistent. It’s always a struggle to balance work, life, and fitness. My goal for 2016 is to do some kind of exercise every day. I’m sure that at some point I’ll find a race/event I want to train for, but for now, I’m hoping for consistency. Other resolutions include: read more books, write more, and work on finding a balance between hard work and time with my family.
What’s in your workout playlist right now?
I have a few highly refined workout playlists that I’ve developed over the last ten years or so. They’re very diverse and kind of top secret at the moment, but I will say that the artists include Flo Rida, System of a Down, Taylor Swift, MSTRKRFT, Massive Attack, TV On The Radio, Sia, Lady Gaga, and many many others.
What’s the wackiest thing that’s ever happened to you on the radio?
When I was 21, I was the host of a morning show on a rock station in Boone, NC. I was also responsible for making sure that the software was set up so that the station didn’t go off the air at midnight. Well, one night I was driving my car through town and all of a sudden it burst into flames. In all the chaos, I forgot to flip the switch to keep the station on the air at midnight. Not good at all. It’s kind of the memory that makes me cringe every time I think about it.
What is your fantasy career?
Since I was 8, I wanted to be a play-by-play announcer for the NBA. I’ve done a little bit of that, but still haven’t reached the NBA yet. (I’m pretty happy with my photography and podcast career now, though)
What is your favorite stress reliever?
Trail Running late in the day, especially in the winter. If not that, weight lifting while listening to my super-secret pump-you-up weight lifting playlist. Other than exercise, I get great stress relief from laughing with friends, craft beer, and the occasional glass of scotch.
What was your major in college?
I was a liberal studies major at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, with a minor in sociology and exercise science.
What is the last thing you ate?
Steamed Brussels sprouts with Sriracha sauce and black pepper. I eat this as a snack pretty much every day.
What is always in your kitchen?
Oatmeal, black beans, coffee, and beer.
Do you have a guilty pleasure?
Probably beer, scotch, Honey Nut Cheerios, and Lady Gaga. Not necessarily at the same time. And I’m not even sure I feel all that guilty about it.
Do you have any pre-race rituals?
Not really. Every race is a little different and my routine largely depends on who I’m running with. I’m really not a morning person, so probably the most reliable part of my pre-race routine is complaining about how early it is.
